Do I have cancer of the ovary?
First approved by the FDA in 3/2010, a new test called OVA-1 is now available that can help you and your doctor make a decision about surgery. This test is NOT for screening; rather, it is for the patient with an ovarian mass who is already planning surgery.
Using the results from 5 different biomarkers in your blood, the chance of your mass being cancer or not can be predicted with much more accuracy than has yet been available. Given that information, you and your doctor can decide whether surgery should be done by your gynecologist or if you would be better to have your surgery done by a “super-specialist” trained in gynecologic cancer treatment – a gynecologic oncologist.
People who may benefit from the OVA-1 test:
- Women over age 18 with an ovarian mass
- Surgery is planned (not yet referred to gynecologic oncologist)
- No history of cancer in the past 5 years
- Negative or very low rheumatoid factor (rheumatoid arthritis; some cases of lupus)
For additional information, contact our office or visit the OVA1 website.
